  • The result was that we needed to replace 22.7 square metres of teak decking. We had quotes from three suppliers in Phuket, Thailand: Precision Shipwright Services, Phuket Inter Woodwork and Yacht Repair. We've had good reports of the quality of work by all three companies. Yacht Repair quoted the lowest cost, but Marly, the owner, wanted to work on the boat at Yacht Haven where there is no a haul-out facility. It would have been cheaper to leave the boat in the water, but Yacht& ...

  • Yesterday we saw a boat I just fell in love with - an Oyster 485. I could live the rest of my days on this boat and be perfectly happy. My SO isn't quite so on board with that idea as I am but I'm working on it. The boat is rock solid. Below decks it is practically perfect and the boat is equipped to go anywhere in the world. On top it isn't as pretty but it's structurally sound, from bow to stern and the top of the mast to the keel. But the teak decks are in their last days.

  • Practical Sailor contributor Joe Minick breaks down the steps to replacing a teak deck aboard your boat yourself, including planning and budgeting, removing the old teak, prepping the deck for bonding; laying and caulking new teak; and ... the quay in a marina with a reputable marine carpentry shop. They recommended doing the work afloat to avoid the risk of falling and to avoid the heavy labor of hauling lengths of teak, tools, and weights up a 12-foot ladder. It was good advice. 1.

  • Quote from the early days of Flexiteek news: “A greener and cheaper alternative to teak decking was unveiled at the Southhampton Boat Show by Golden Arrow Marine. Flexiteek is a strip plank made out of recycled plastic, but has a similar look to the real thing. The plastic used is fire resistant to Class 0 standards, has a solid colour through its depth and can be sanded just like a teak deck. It bends readily over bumps and hollows, and apparently can be curved to& ...

  • Nowadays with composite construction teak decking is now a symbol of a good quality boat not a form of construction. teak decks on boats are very expensive in both materials and labor. A quick estimate for a custom marine teak deck is $150-175 per square foot for the top end. If you like the look and feel of a teak deck then you may want to look at the many Man made teak deck alternatives which are cropping up on the market. Synthetic faux or fake teak decking& ...

  • In many parts of a yacht, teak has been replaced by mahogany and Iroko (also known as 'African teak', although each wood has nothing in common) but it remains the material of choice for decking. However, supplies are ... Many trees are harvested when they are between 40 and 60 years old to get a return on the investment, and this means that the wood is soft and not available in the long lengths that are best for deck planking. Much of the modern supply of teak& ...

  • Nu teak, Tek Deck, and a couple of others have a lot going for them... no maintenance, they look quite good, and they don't leak. Did I mention they don't leak? I have a friend who is refitting a Mayflower 49 foot ketch, which is teak decked originally. The teak has twisted, and the deck leaks despite being fastened from underneath etc etc. He is considering synthetic teak. Downside: expensive. Flexiteek, Nu teak, Tek Deck, Marine Deck 2000, and Unique teak are& ...

  • I have a boat with a teak deck on which so much material has worn away that the grooves are no longer deep enough to hold the caulking. I understand the options are: 1. Cut the grooves deeper and recaulk 2. Remove the teak completely and replace 3. Fill the grooves and apply some surface, e.g. fiberglass and or paint. Option 1 is not my favourite since it requires skills that I do not possess, and, in places, there is probably not enough thickness in the remaining material to allow a& ...

  • Laying teak Decking. Opener. Opinion seems to be divided on whether teak decks on a boat are good or bad. Personally I love them providing they are properly laid and maintained. I'll be discussing looking after teak in a later posting but for today I wanted to go through the steps for a correctly laid teak deck, what's involved ... When you are happy with the layout mark each strip so that you can replace them in the correct position after you have applied the adhesive.

  • Although it's a potentially durable material for marine use, the teak used in decking can quickly deteriorate if not cared for correctly, leaving the owner with a significant bill for repair or replacement. Don't underestimate this; a new teak deck for a 40-foot boat will cost upwards of $30,000 (and it's a bill that all too frequently comes as an unpleasant surprise to the owner). The biggest problem is that the gorgeous scrubbed look that we all see on photos of superyachts& ...
